Simple ways to ensure the freshness of eggs

Most people rely on the manufacturing date of food products to ensure the safety and freshness of the food we eat. Our eyes and nose are the best tools for determining the freshness of meat, fruits and much more. But eggs cannot be tested with our senses unless you crack it.

The Float Test for uncracked eggs:
Fill a bowl with cold water and the water level should be approximately twice the height of the egg. Place the eggs in the bowl, if they sink to the bottom and lay flat on their surfaces means its fresh. Those eggs are good to eat. If the eggs stand on one end at the bottom, they are a few weeks older but still fresh to eat. But, if they float to the surface then those eggs are no longer fresher and not safe to eat.

Plate and Sniff Test for cracked eggs:
The cracked eggs can be tested with yolk and egg white. Break the egg into a flat plate or flat surface but not in a bowl. For the fresh eggs, the yolk will be bright yellow or orange and the white should not spread much. The fresh egg’s yolk will have a round and compact appearance and the white that surrounds it will be thick and stays close to the yolk. A less fresh egg will contain a flatter yolk and a thinner white which will be runnier. If you sniff, the fresh eggs should not have much smell at all. When an egg spreads out when cracked is not bad which is just older and can be good for hard-boiling. When you do the sniff test, even slightly rotten eggs have a strong and distinct smell.

The Sound Test for freshness:
The Sound Test is not widely used when compared with previous tests. But it can work well by relying on your hearing rather than the sight also. Ensure the place is silent without any noises, then take the egg and gently shake it from side to side close to your ear. If you cannot hear any sound, the egg is fine. If you hear a sloshing sound, it may be bad and don’t consume it. If you are not sure with this test, it can try with above two tests.

Thus the quality of eggs can be tested in our home itself to ensure its freshness. The above tests are so simple and easy to check within minutes. Fresh eggs are good for frying or poaching. The less fresh eggs can be used for cake mixtures or omelets in which the shape and texture of the eggs are not noticeable.
